Cleaning Catch Basins – Not a DIY Job…

The basics of cleaning a catch basin is to remove the debris  that may be blocking the flow of water. Even though it sounds simple, this is not something you should trust yourself to do on your own. Most of the catch basins in the lower mainland are very deep. Trying to scoop out the debris will not only challenge your senses (usually the debris will have a foul smell), but it can also result in a fall or a strain. If you don’t do this for a living like the pros at EdenFlo, you may be in for more than you bargained. EdenFlo has the right tools for the job, and they know the best practices to ensure that commercial drain flows are maximized.

As well, EdenFlo will do an inspection as they are servicing your catch basin to ensure the infrastructure is in good shape.

Rather than try to do it yourself, and then finding out that you will still need to make a call to EdenFlo to deal with a clog, get it done right the first time and put your mind at rest.

Now is the time to get your catch basins inspected and serviced. Edenflo offers the best service in Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Delta, Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Richmond and Lions Bay. Call the experts at 604 575 1414 or fill out our online request for your catch basin service

Tips to Keep Your Catch Basins Working Properly

We realize that your catch basins are not your top priority.  However, when they get clogged, it quickly rises to the top of the attention list. Whether your catch basins are part of your home or commercial storm drainage system, a few simple maintenance tips can go a long way in ensuring that your catch basins do the job they were designed to do.

  • Keep grates clear – It becomes difficult for catch basins to collect debris and allow water to drain if the grates are obstructed. As time goes by, without regular cleaning, the grates can become clogged with large pieces of litter and leaves or other debris. Keep an eye on storm drains and remove debris from the grates every few weeks, especially during spring and fall when leaves and twigs are more common.
  • Remove storage debris– Catch basins that are working effectively will collect debris in the bottom, keeping it from flowing through the pipes.  Keep the storage area less than half full of debris so that the pipes do not become blocked and the catch basins continues to function. Use a pipe or broom stick down the grate and take note of where it hits debris and how much further it is to the bottom.

These simple tips can help you to maintain your catch basins between regular cleaning service from Edenflo.

Catch Basin Maintenance 101.

When it rains, or there’s a sudden snow melt (rare here in the lower mainland, but possible), it’s essential that the infrastructure in an urban or suburban area is designed so that there’s somewhere for the water to go. Otherwise, it ends up pooling in basements and around building foundations, where it can cause costly damage and lead to structural problems, mould growth, and other unpleasant conditions.

Most areas use storm drains (intakes that are connected to municipal storm sewers) and catch basins (“holding areas” for water that can fill when there’s a lot of flow, and empty slowly later) for runoff management.

It’s easy to forget about storm water management systems when it’s not raining, or when they’re working properly. The problem is that we don’t notice that there’s a problem until it’s too late – when the water is advancing on our homes and businesses, or filling up our basements.

You need to take stock of your storm water management systems when it’s not raining. Edenflo specializes in pump truck services on the lower mainland, and can help you keep your storm drains and catch basins free of debris, and your drains flowing. We operate British Columbia’s premiere pump-truck service, with high-pressure water jets to dislodge clogs and vacuum pumping to take them (and whatever else) away for environmentally responsible disposal. We even have a special “lowboy” unit that fits into lower spaces, like underground parking garages.

Edenflo provides emergency response and preventive maintenance services to both residential and commercial customers. If you’ve got storm sewers or catch basins on your property call us and we’ll offer advice and service that will keep you out of trouble when the skies start falling.
