You can also save money with preventive maintenance on your system. Here are a couple of preventative tips that you can use to save money:
Residential Tip #1
More frequent cleaning is necessary in older septic systems. Over time, small amounts of sediment will escape the septic tank and flow out into the leach lines. Excessive amounts of sediment in the lines can cause the perforations to become blocked, limiting the amount of effluent that can be absorbed by the leach bed. More frequent cleaning will limit the amount of sediment leaving the tank and lengthen the life of your system, postponing the need for costly field repairs or replacement.
Residential Tip #2
Save money by locating and exposing your tank. If you have a septic system, but don't know where the opening is, go through the documents you received when you purchased your home. If you're lucky, the previous owner included a map. If not; can you get ahold of the previous owner? If that leads to a dead end, find yourself a probe; a piece of rebar works great. From your yard, go to the wall on which the main bathroom in the house is located. If you step back from the house and look on the roof, you should see a vent stack. Start probing the earth in a line perpendicular to the wall, moving away from the house. The septic tank is usually located within 10' - 15' of the foundation wall and any where from a few inches to a few feet below the ground. If all else fails, Edenflo would be happy to provide location services.
